Advantages and disadvantages

An overview of the advantages and disadvantages of the two tuition free board year options for UU students

Old style: advantages

  • You receive compensation for board activities;
  • You do not pay any tuition fees;
  • You may use the University Library, computer work spaces and computer rooms, and UU Gmail
  • With your Solis-id and password, you can access various university services, such as OSIRIS, Blackboard, and SURFspot
  • You may use Olympos and Parnassos facilities at the student rate.
  • The SSH regards the agreement you conclude with UU as proof that you meet one of the requirements of the campus contract.
  • You may use the city centre ICT media facilities and those of FSC.
  • If you suspend your enrolment as a student, your student loan, and your student public transport entitlement, you remain subject to the transitional arrangements of the student loan system.

Old style: disadvantages

  • From September 2024 to August 2025, you are not entitled to a student grant or a student public transport card.
  • During the whole of the academic year (from 1 September up to and including 31 August), you may not receiveĀ any teaching or take any examinations or Bachelor’s or Master’s examinations. You should therefore think very carefully about whether or not to apply for postponement of your Bachelor’s degree graduation.
  • Pay close attention if you request a postponement of graduation for your bachelor’s degree. After all, you can only graduate in the next academic year (September 2025)!
  • You are not entitled to insurance cover at student rates; other amenities that depend on your status as a student may also be affected (bank account, etc.).
  • Your transitional right for certain tuition fees may lapse. Be sure to inquire about this via bestuurbeurs@uu.nl if you are following more than 1 course.

New style: disadvantages

  • You use up 12 months of your student grant and your student public transport card. It is not possible to only deactivate your student public transport card. If you use up one month of your student grant, then you automatically use up one month of your student public transport card entitlement. (Bear in mind that your entitlement to a student grant and the student public transport card is limited. The following applies: https://www.uu.nl/bachelors/en/general-information/international-students/financial-matters/grants-and-scholarships
  • During the whole of the academic year (from 1 September up to and including 31 August), you may not receiveĀ any teaching or take any examinations or Bachelor’s or Master’s examinations. If you do, you may be required to repay your compensation for board activities (retroactively).
  • You should therefore think very carefully about whether or not to apply for postponement of your Bachelor’s degree graduation in combination with a tuition free board year. Remember, you can only graduate after your board year!
